A little Hollywood fantasy decorating in Cape Town

Sometimes you get a client with a bold and slightly unexpected idea. For a decorator, that’s really fun!
This client wanted a little slice of Beverly Hills: Hollywood glamour in pink, green and gold. The brief was a small two-room cottage. A tiny space that had previously been decorated in extremely neutral creams, with a large mirror dominating the room and the sofa facing the wrong way. Now they wanted something different — a total fantasy.
We started with the wallpaper.
We needed something that was in stock, and were lucky enough to find a gorgeous design of lush green and pink leaves. We removed the large mirror and wallpapered the entire living room, making the room a cosy, jungle-like experience.
The sofa needed to be small enough for the room, but luxurious, comfortable and worthy of a movie star. I found exactly that: a gorgeous green velvet sofa on castors. I added a gold-framed coffee table, a standing lamp with a cone-shaped shade and, naturally, palm trees on pink cushions.
The bedroom continued the fantasy.
We painted the walls a soft jade green and added a dark green rug with a leafy pattern. Tiny marble bedside tables kept the room feeling elegant without overwhelming the small space, while gold wall lights added another touch of Hollywood glamour as did the stork birds on a pink background.
Decorating should be fun. Your home doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s — and sometimes the most memorable rooms come from having the courage to say, “Let’s!” instead of “let’s not”.
