Home staging is all about preparing homes for sale by making them as appealing as possible to potential buyers. In South Africa, with thousands of homes sold every year, there's a growing need for talented home stagers who can help properties stand out. The job involves transforming rooms and entire homes to highlight their best features, which can make a big difference in how quickly a home sells and the price it can fetch.
Do you have a good eye for design, creativity, patience, passion, and a genuine desire to help people? Home staging could be a wonderful fit for you. Sure, it requires hard work, attention to detail, and good communication skills. But if you love being hands-on, enjoy creative work, and have an interest in real estate, it can be incredibly fulfilling.
Is it easy? It’s not without its challenges—like meeting tight deadlines and balancing client needs—but the reward of seeing a space come to life and knowing you’ve made a difference can be so worth it.
Starting afresh
I've experienced a few career changes myself, from teaching in Spain to working as a plain language writer and editor, and spending years in the corporate world. Also a few personal changes, like a divorce in my late 50s. When I moved into home staging, it felt like coming home to what I was meant to do.
No need to lots of capital
Don’t worry if you’re concerned about needing a lot of capital upfront to buy furniture and store it—starting in home staging doesn’t have to be that way. In the beginning, you can focus on offering consultations, providing valuable advice on how homeowners can stage their own spaces using what they already have. This is a great way to start building your reputation without a big investment.

You are your biggest asset
Building strong relationships with real estate agents is key. Agents can become your biggest advocates, recommending your services to sellers who need that extra touch to make their properties shine. It’s all about building rapport, being reliable, and showing your passion for what you do. As you grow and start getting staging jobs, you can slowly begin investing in furniture and decor pieces.
Choose what you want to stage
Over the past few years, I've staged everything from R600,000 townhouses and apartments to show units and mansions worth over R20 million. Each project, whether big or small, has been a unique adventure. I've worked with amazing people—agents, sellers, and developers—and learned so much about the industry.
There’s so much potential in home staging, both creatively and financially. That's why I also love training others to step into this field. Our home staging course is here to offer you all the guidance, hands-on experience, and support you need to start this new journey.
If you're looking for a career where you can combine creativity with a bit of business savvy, meet wonderful people, and truly make an impact, home staging might just be the perfect path for you.
